“In a way, it’s a kind of debt that I feel I owe, an emotional debt,” the musician Sting said in 2018, explaining The Last Ship, which saw him writing home through a musical about a ship-building community much like his own. Sting left the town of Wallsend at 18, thinking its shipyard a “dark, dangerous place.” But in The Last Ship he plays the shipyard’s foreman, struggling to rebuild his community amid the rubble of shuttered industry. Guaranteed to perform in every performance, Sting honors his origins by telling its story through an original score and some classics. —C.J.F.
