Joni Mitchell recorded endless hours’ worth of home demos, live performances, and original compositions, including would-be-classics like “Both Sides Now,” all before her debut album, Song to a Seagull, arrived in 1968. Now Mitchell has announced an extensive archive series, which will roll out in CD and digital over the next several years, starting with Volume 1: The Early Years (1963–1967). It’s the logical place to begin but also, arguably, the most interesting. These six hours of unreleased audio—which include her earliest known recording, at 19, on her Canadian hometown’s radio station—let you hear the young musician heading into the unknown with her own songs and developing the bittersweet style that would make her famous. Volume 1 is also available in limited-edition vinyl. —J.V.
