The late Chris Burden’s “Urban Light”—composed of more than 200 historic street lamps—has become an ecstatic L.A. mainstay since its installation in 2008. Now, a new sculptural installation of 40 graphite figures by British-Trinidadian visual artist Zak Ové stands adjacent to Burden’s. Taking its title from two major milestones in black history—the first stage production to utilize blackface makeup (Ben Jonson’s 1605 The Masque of Blackness) and the first novel by an African American to win the National Book Award (Ralph Ellison’s 1952 Invisible Man)—the installation harnesses the power of the African diaspora. —J.V.
