The Great Monster Dada Show

Oct 25, 2019 – Jan 26, 2020
Sonja Henies vei 31, 1311, Høvikodden, Norway

“While the guns rumbled in the distance, we sang, painted, made collages and wrote poems with all our might,” recalled the French-German artist Jean Arp. In the last days and aftershocks of World War I, many artists found refuge in neutral Switzerland, where freedom gave rise to a new artistic sensibility—Dadaism, a satirical and absurdist response to the war’s cultural and political upheavals. With pieces by Arp, André Breton, Max Ernst, and 40 others, this exhibition illustrates both the movement and the historical moment that created it, while spotlighting pieces that are particularly relevant to today’s chaotic climate. —C.J.F.
