The Joan Brown of 1960 was a different artist than the Joan Brown of 1976. Featuring a dozen rarely shown paintings made during that 16-year period, this solo exhibition highlights the Bay Area artist’s evolution in style. The show takes its name from a painting Brown made in 1959, the summer after she finished her undergraduate degree at the California School of Fine Arts (now the San Francisco Art Institute), and before she began work on her graduate degree. She would soon meet her mentor Elmer Bischoff, an artist who inspired an aesthetic shift. Her early work depicts daily life and domestic tableaux in bright, thick oil paints, while her later paintings take inspiration from the simplified figures found in Egyptian art. The show sees Brown’s move away from impasto and toward glossy enamel. —J.D.
