The Emperor Claudius: Messalina, Agrippina, and the Shadows of a Dynasty

Apr 6 – Oct 27, 2019
Lungotevere in Augusta, 00186 Roma RM, Italy

The first Roman emperor to be born outside Italy, Claudius achieved a lot. History, however, has focused mainly on his gruesome personal life, including his relationships with his third and fourth wives (the former was killed with Claudius’s consent; the latter is thought to have been responsible for murdering him). “The Emperor Claudius” looks at all of his life, including the ambitious construction projects he undertook and his military conquest of Britain. Works are on loan from the Louvre, the Vatican Museums, the British Museum, and other major institutions. —J.V.
