One of Amtrak’s longest routes in the U.S., the Coast Starlight stretches up the West Coast, traveling daily between Los Angeles and Seattle. The train and its 35-hour trip serves as the setting for Keith Bunin’s acclaimed play, which focuses on six passengers, one of whom, TJ, boards as a combat medic but fears he will end the trip as an ex-Navy man. While he doesn’t speak much to his fellow passengers—an alcoholic, an animator, a bartender, a businessman, and a mom—the reason for his potential Navy discharge becomes clear. The Coast Starlight premiered at La Jolla Playhouse and now comes to Lincoln Center. Tyne Rafaeli directs. —Jensen Davis
