The Beautiful Game

Bill Nighy in The Beautiful Game.

Late last year, Michael Fassbender took a break from his usual dramatic roles to star in Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins. Based on a true story, the movie followed American Samoa’s floundering national soccer team in its attempt to qualify for the World Cup. Now comes Netflix’s The Beautiful Game, which also draws its source material from reality, in this case the Homeless World Cup, an organization dedicated to both ending homelessness and hosting a tournament for homeless soccer players from around the world. In 2023, more than 20 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams were organized for the event. The Beautiful Game tracks England’s squad as it heads for the championship in Rome. Their coach is Mal (Bill Nighy), who leads the team while nurturing Vinny (Michael Ward), an exceptionally talented striker and former professional who must overcome personal strife if he is to contribute to the team. —Jack Sullivan

The Beautiful Game premieres in select theaters March 22, with a Netflix release to follow
