In the 1980s and 90s, while rock stars wore leather and kohl, Prince took the stage in sequins and lace. At the 1985 American Music Awards, he sported high-heeled booties in glittering green-and-blue brocade. At the 1987 MTV VMAs, he wore boots covered in cartoon illustrations. In the 2000s, he went from suede roller skates to studded heels. Prince’s flamboyant footwear was an important part of his persona, and his close friend Donatella Versace frequently made custom pieces for him. The late singer’s former home in Chanhassen, Minnesota, is the setting for this exhibition of 300 pairs of shoes. A pavilion is dedicated to his Versaces. —E.C.
