Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, at 11:30 P.M. It was a mild night in Málaga, Spain, at 15 Place de la Merced. As an adult, Picasso spent most of his life in France, living with his first wife Olga Khokhlova, and then moving through relationships with many women, including Marie-Thérèse Walter, Dora Maar, Françoise Gilot, and, finally, Jacqueline Roque. He only married once more after Khokhlova, and that was to Roque, in 1961, whom he was with until he died. To celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the artist’s death, in 1973, the museum that now exists at 15 Place de la Merced brings together work from Picasso’s entire career. —Elena Clavarino
