Artist and musician Terry Adkins described his creative process to Bomb in 2015. “I tried to make these material things as immediate and ethereal as music,” he said. “And the music I pursued, I tried to make it … visceral and physical—almost approaching matter.” At his historically black alma mater, Fisk University, approximately 40 sculptures, prints, and installations constitute an Adkins homecoming, and honor the university’s role in shaping his art. Adkins’s “recitals”—his term for a series of works—explore the biographies of Bessie Smith and Jimi Hendrix, and also the strong sonic and visual links in his practice. —C.J.F.
