“What became apparent to me,” the Bahamian artist Tavares Strachan recently said in an interview with Art Newspaper, “was that there is this whole world of invisibility that was in plain sight.” The world of invisibility he refers to is the story of Matthew Henson, a Black explorer who, in 1909, was the first man to reach the North Pole. Henson’s story is little known, and in this exhibition Strachan uses it as a springboard for aesthetic exploration. Large-scale collage paintings and sculptural mashups are part of this immersive exhibition. —E.C.
