Next up for Tate Britain’s annual commission is the Guyanese-British artist, Hew Locke, who will produce a work that speaks to the neoclassical Duveen Galleries. Locke’s upbringing between the U.K. and Guyana has influenced his art, which questions colonial legacies and international identities. References to global histories exist at every level of a Locke creation, including the materials themselves, which can vary from an ancient coat of arms to a modern plastic toy to an ephemeral flower. Tackling this commission is a major undertaking even without a global pandemic. “Taking on the role during lockdown presented great practical challenges,” Locke has said. “But it also fed into the ideas behind it, combining with themes I’ve worked with over the years, making this an incredibly intense experience for me.” —Clara Molot
