Since 2015, the Beirut-born artist and composer Tarek Atoui has traveled through city ports around the world, stopping in Singapore, Athens, Porto, Abu Dhabi, and Beirut, recording the sounds he’s heard along the way. Atoui aims to bridge the gap between traditional music practices and contemporary art—in short, he creates sound art. Do we hear only through the ears? Can sound affect social and historical events? In this exhibition, Atoui combines his waterfront recordings with marble blocks and steel girders collected from each port, creating a series of singular aural experiences. —E.C.
