Witty, inventive, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical of 1984 returns. Academy Award-nominee Jake Gyllenhaal reprises his Broadway performance of 2017 as the maverick French Impressionist painter Georges Seurat, and Tony Award-winner Annaleigh Ashford is back as Dot. As the first act unfolds we meet a host of characters who happen to be in the park that Sunday and eventually become the subjects on the painter’s canvas. With the same actors onstage but under new guises, the second act takes place 100 years later. Gyllenhaal is now Seurat’s great-grandson, himself a painter, seeking to confront what his grandfather feared. —B.A.
