Starting next week, there’s going to be a beach in the middle of Brooklyn, featuring 25 tons of sand. Sun & Sea is a beachside opera that debuted at the 2019 Venice Biennale. The U.S. premiere at BAM Fisher, two years in the making and delayed four times, features 13 vocalists who sprawl out on lounge chairs as they harmonize “songs of worry and of boredom, songs of almost nothing,” as one curator puts it. These songs become increasingly sinister and surreal as they address the environmental degradation—the “pallid whiteness” of the Great Barrier Reef, for example—that plagues the beach. Audience members are encouraged to wander around during the performance and are also welcome to hang out on the sand as long as they please. —J.D.
