In the early 80s, the Cuban-born artist Gustavo Pérez Monzón won acclaim as a participant in “Volume One,” a group of young artists who introduced conceptual art to Cuba. In the mid 80s he walked away from art, began to teach, and in the 90s moved to Mexico. Three years ago Pérez Monzón began to make art once more. “I think art has become very rigid,” he said in 2018. “I believe in experimenting, improvising from a place where words, techniques or conceptualizations aren’t necessary.” His art is now more Symbolist. And mysterious. —J.V.
