Between 1714 and 1830, Kings George I, George II, George III, and George IV ruled over Britain. Hence, the Georgian era. It was a time marked by convergence. Extreme wealth and extreme poverty collided in urban environments. Cities became overpopulated and public executions took place in squares. London’s Drury Lane, Covent Garden, and Haymarket theaters were filled to overflowing; the crowds were known to pelt actors with rotten fruit and vegetables. Gainsborough, J. M. W. Turner, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and John Constable were artists of note. This exhibition makes Georgian style its subject. It features the era’s paintings and fashions as well as objects such as jewels and snuff boxes. —Elena Clavarino
