Sterling Ruby: Turbines

Sterling Ruby, TURBINE. DUTCH WIP., 2022.

“I use many different media as a kind of schizophrenic labor strategy,” says the artist Sterling Ruby, whose multifaceted oeuvre—sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, collage, video, textiles—can feel a bit all-over-the-place. But, continues Ruby, “this scattered routine belongs within a coherent strategy.” In his WIDW paintings (the acronym is an abbreviation of “window”), which he began in 2016, Ruby brought acrylic paint, oil paint, and squares of cardboard and patterned fabric together on a canvas to create a collage that suggested windowpanes. In this new series, “Turbine,” Ruby is using many of the same materials, but this time to evoke the Futurists and Russian Constructivism (he takes inspiration from Giacomo Balla and El Lissitzky). Like turbines, these paintings hum with energy. —Elena Clavarino
