“Color has great depth,” the artist Stanley Whitney has said, “it can bring up great emotion and immense feeling.” Whitney lived in Rome for five years during the 1990s and would wander the city’s grand streets, drawing inspiration from churches and cathedrals—a feeling of space and scale he pressed into his ever-shifting grids. Today, the artist lives and works in both New York City and Parma. He paints exuberant grids in endless variations, filling canvases with seemingly simple squares of color organized by straight lines. Whitney’s work is informed by both jazz and quilt making, and also by his idols Piet Mondrian, Giorgio Morandi, and Charlie Parker. This exhibition present new paintings by the artist. As he says, “The color makes the structure.” —Elena Clavarino
