Stanley Whitney: The Italian Paintings

Aug 4 – Nov 27, 2022
S. Polo, 2774, 30125 Venezia VE

“The color, the light, the ancient architecture,” says the painter Stanley Whitney, “I never tire of contemplating Rome.” In fact, Whitney lived in Rome for five years during the 1990s and would wander the city’s grand streets, drawing inspiration from its churches and cathedrals, a feeling of space and scale he pressed into his ever-shifting grids. Since then, Whitney has kept a studio outside the northern city of Parma, where he retreats for long hot summers of Lambrusco and parmesan cheese. In this exhibition, paintings, works on paper, and sketchbooks from the last 30 years are considered through an Italian lens. —Elena Clavarino
