The all-Black-and-Latinx Sphinx Symphony Orchestra in cooperation with the Washington Chorus serves up a smorgasbord celebrating composers of color. The emotional climax of the program is sure to be Joel Thompson’s seven-movement choral piece Seven Last Words of the Unarmed, in which Biblical allusion and contemporary tragedy coalesce. Among the unarmed men given voice here are Trayvon Martin (“What are you following me for?”), Amadou Diallo (“Mom, I’m going to college”), Michael Brown (“I don’t have a gun—stop shooting”), and Eric Garner (“I can’t breathe”). Also to be heard: music by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and Valerie Coleman, Augustus Hill’s arrangement of “Fix Me, Jesus,” and John Legend’s “Glory,” from the film Selma. —Matthew Gurewitsch
