Spencer Sweeney, a downtown New York rock ’n’ roll figure, is also a painter. He likes to arrange bodies in the poses and postures of classic nudes, but clothes the bodies in raucous color. Sweeney is none too exacting about anatomy: he makes figures out of zigzags, legs out of S shapes. At the Brant Foundation, Sweeney’s self-portraits occupy the lower level, while large-scale variations of his nudes grace the upstairs gallery space. Other paintings announce the opening of Headz, a collaborative music performance salon that Sweeney has initiated with Urs Fischer and Brendan Dugan. —Elena Clavarino
