In December 2019, President Trump established the Space Force, the first new military branch since the creation of the Air Force. “Space,” Trump explained at the signing ceremony, “is the world’s newest war-fighting domain.” Despite the belligerence, his plan to return an American to the moon by 2024 now seems as untenable as capturing a black hole. As we approach the 50th anniversary of several astronautical achievements, this virtual exhibition uses photographs to tell the story of space discovery, bringing what is known about nearby planets into focus, while honoring the yet undiscovered frontiers of our universe. —C.J.F.
