Last year, Sonia Boyce’s installation at the Venice Biennale won her the fair’s most coveted prize, the Golden Lion. Her idea was innovative. The British artist gathered singers Jacqui Dankworth, Sofia Jernberg, Poppy Ajudha, and Tanita Tikaram and placed them in a studio with composer Errollyn Wallen. After a warm-up, Wallen instructed each singer to inprovise, and also to respond to the other singers. The performers relaxed, the atmosphere opened, and Boyce filmed the experimental give and take. She then divided the footage and showcased it in different rooms alongside printed film stills, tessellating wallpapers, and reflective gold 3-D sculptures. —Elena Clavarino
