La Périchole, among the most delectable of Jacques Offenbach’s irresistible opéras bouffes, is set in old Lima, where a wolf of a viceroy lusts for a pretty but penniless street singer whose heart is otherwise engaged. Though the score is threaded through with Latin-inflected dance melodies, it’s unmistakably Parisian in spirit. Now Eric Sean Fogel, James Lowe, and Kelley Rourke have transposed the action to Prohibition Era New Orleans, with Isabel Leonard as the charmer who—as collectors of Frederica von Stade’s recordings will recall—gets sweetly sozzled singing for her supper.
