I doubt Nancy Meyers had a teenage audience in mind when she created Something’s Gotta Give, and yet she got my attention. Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, Frances McDormand—could it get any better? Nicholson is the aging playboy Harry Sanborn. When he and his young girlfriend, Marin (Amanda Peet), arrive at her family beach house in Southampton, they find that Marin’s mother, the playwright Erica Barry (Keaton), is also there for the weekend. While Erica is shocked to see who her daughter is dating, when Sanborn has a heart attack in her house she must take care of him. His life-threatening nonchalance clashes with her neurotic personality, but inevitably the two fall in love. Although I tend to cry easily during movies, especially when it comes to romantic comedies, I look to Something’s Gotta Give for a laugh. —Jeanne Malle
