Have you ever heard of a group therapy technique that lets interracial couples hash out dynamics of desire and power by pretending they’re at Tara or Twelve Oaks? It’s called “antebellum sexual performance therapy—completely fabricated—and it’s the outrageous premise of Jeremy O. Harris’s Slave Play. For transgression it’s a 10. For imagination, also a 10. When it opened on Broadway in October of 2019, a question loomed: Could mainstream audiences handle it? Yes, it turns out. The play received 12 Tony nominations, the most ever for a non-musical play, and returns to Broadway for an eight-week run. Slave Play then heads to Los Angeles. —L.J.
