The artist Shirin Neshat, born in Iran and based in the U.S., rose to prominence with work that addressed the ideological struggle between Iran’s religious values and female liberty. Her vision, however, has turned westward. “We are seeing a reshuffling of the cards of power and its players,” Neshat says. “With the rise of white supremacy and the present threat against immigrants, I now turn my lens towards my host country, America. This new series of work investigates how these changes ultimately rupture individual lives.” The series to which she refers, “Land of Dreams,” was completed in 2019 and combines her native country’s calligraphy with Western-style portraiture. —E.C.
