The South African novelist Lauren Beukes hit on an ingenious question for her third novel: How do you catch a time-traveling serial killer? The answer, called The Shining Girls, was published in 2013 and has now been adapted into an Apple TV+ limited series, minus the definite article and plus Elisabeth Moss as the survivor of an attack, who teams up with a Chicago reporter to untangle the plot’s insidious twists.
