In February of 2017, Senator Elizabeth Warren was giving a speech that criticized the record of Senator Jeff Sessions, Trump’s nominee for attorney general, when she was cut off by her Republican colleagues. “She was warned,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. “Nevertheless, she persisted.” His feeble excuse for silencing the Senator is now feminist shorthand. It is also the inspiration behind Chelsea Clinton’s children’s book, She Persisted (2017), which explains how the perseverance of 13 American women—including Harriet Tubman, Helen Keller, and Ruby Bridges—led to change. The book has been made into a musical for young audiences, and thanks to a new digital format viewers can stream the show on-demand. —C.J.F.
