Music held a powerful place in Jean-Michel Basquiat’s artistic practice. In 2020, a big show in Boston looked at Basquiat’s place in the hip-hop generation. Now, the MMFA presents the first large-scale multimedia exhibition to focus on his relationship with music. The works here picture musical instruments, and include references to jazz, classical music, hip-hop, and rap. Baquiat’s paintings are accompanied by video footage of the painter at work and—thanks to Cité de la musique/Philharmonie de Paris—the music that inspired him, from Beethoven to Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Maria Callas. —Clara Molot
