Asked how he navigated the space between abstract and figurative painting, the Irish-born artist Sean Scully answered, “I jump.” In the series Eleuthera—23 paintings of his young son playing in the sand of the Bahamian island, Eleuthera—Scully’s jump is jaw-dropping. Personal, primal, these color-drenched scenes have the push and impact of Scully’s monumental stripe studies. “My son,” he says, “is my most important project.” —E.C.
