Sean Scully: Early Prints

Feb 11 – Apr 4, 2020
Georgenstraße 15, 80799 München, Germany

Sean Scully recalls the sensual properties of a place or moment and recounts it in paint on linen canvas, with thick sweeping lines. He once said, “My job is to return abstraction to the people: in a sense, to popularize it without lowering the bar, which is a lot easier said than done.” The exhibition “Early Prints” focuses on Scully’s etchings. Important series on view include Pomes Penyeach, Barcelona Diptych, Ten Towers, and Etchings for Federico García Lorca. Created between 1993 and 2003, they speak Scully’s language of rich-hued stripes, bars, and checkerboard patterns. —E.C.
