The creeping encroachment of Labor Day is apprehended with melancholy. This is true for no one more than students, whose days of poolside liberty swiftly transform to those of buses, desks, and calculators. In an attempt to provide some consolation, the Metrograph is partnering with the film curator Tommy José Stathes in a presentation of vintage cartoons that “encapsulate the upcoming back-to-school season.” Over the course of an hour, Stathes will introduce his chosen 16mm prints—created between 1910 and the 1950s—and include “many titles and ‘orphan films’ that are difficult to access or view elsewhere.” Stathes will also answer questions after the event. —Jack Sullivan
