Roger Herman

Sept 9 – Oct 30, 2021
Rue des Minimes 39, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgium

The German ceramicist Roger Herman is wedded to process, not product. While his ceramics range from small cups to massive vases to towering planters, each piece starts with a wheel-thrown form that is first stacked, then cut, then finally reshaped. Sorry We’re Closed puts dozens of pieces by the Los Angeles-based artist on view, highlighting his range. His ceramics are finished with a variety of techniques—inlays, oxide washes, underglazes—and in a variety of styles, from abstract to figurative designs. All feature casual, rough forms. Herman began his career producing very large abstract paintings. Why did he shift from paint to clay? “There is more openness,” he says. —J.D.
