“As a potter,” the ceramist Roberto Lugo explains, “I aim to carry on the ceramic tradition in a manner that honors the culture and community I come from.” Lugo was raised in Kensington, Philadelphia, a neglected low-income neighborhood. At 25, when Lugo enrolled in a pottery class, his life changed. “This machine kills hate,” he wrote of the potter’s wheel. Lugo brought one into his home and began creating vibrant ceramics, combining patterns from hip-hop with classical forms. Today Lugo teaches at nearby Temple University. This solo show features his recent work, an “homage to the village that raised me up,” he says, “and the legacy of Rookwood Pottery.” —Elena Clavarino
