Marketers are forever touting “long-awaited” debuts the world has not been waiting for. In our dreams, however, we’ve been surrendering to the Norwegian phenomenon Lise Davidsen in Tristan und Isolde for quite some time. Now, at last, she will be singing the role in real time—and in Munich, where Wagner first introduced his rhapsody of love and death on June 10, 1865. Mind you, it’s a concert performance, limited to the second act—but that’s the one that includes that ecstatic love duet, steeped in the philosophy of Schopenhauer. (You haven’t read Schopenhauer, you say? You can’t mean it.) Stuart Skelton sings her lover Tristan, whose entanglements are fraught, indeed.
