“In golf, he’s good; in art, he’s a grand master,” said Glenn O’Brian, the first editor of Interview magazine, about his friend Richard Prince. Born in the Panama Canal Zone, in 1949, Prince became widely known as part of the Pictures Generation of the late 1970s, which also included the artists Cindy Sherman and Laurie Simmons. Still creating today, Prince is an expert in recontextualization—in taking the work of others and making it his own. The Marlboro Man and advertisement cutouts are among the symbols that appear in his work. Fascinated by American pop culture and politics, Prince focuses on themes of alienation and doubt, and attempts to reveal his understanding of national identity in his work. This exhibition features Prince’s cowboy, girlfriend, and advertisement photographs, as well as the rarely shown photo series titled “The Entertainers.” —Jeanne Malle
