“My most important quality or property is curiosity,” Richard Artschwager told New York Magazine in 2012. Born on Boxing Day in 1913, the artist nevertheless refused to be boxed into any medium or style. Approaching the world with humor, he was a master of looking and saw even the most banal object—a door, a window, a table— as worthy of scrutiny. Experimenting with many mediums and materials, Artschwager continually turned to boxes, squares, and rectangles, shapes and stage-like spaces he could use to frame an object, and to elevate our experience of seeing it. To celebrate the centennial of the American artist’s birth, David Nolan Gallery presents over 60 years of his drawings, paintings, and sculptures. —Jeanne Malle
