Remy Jungerman was born and raised in Moengo, Suriname, a small town near the northeastern coast of South America. His father was of European descent, and his mother’s lineage was Bakabusi, an African people who escaped enslavement on Dutch plantations by creating a community deep in the Surinamese rainforests. At 31, Jungerman moved to Amsterdam. His sculptures, installations, collages, and screenprints merge West-African abstract patterns, Maroon textiles, and 20th-century modernist motifs (think Mondrian, think Judd). “My practice isn’t politically influenced, but rather looks on its inner self,” Jungerman said in 2018. “So I am interested in work that relates to my own origin and not only to a Western model. I want to see what happens when I leave this constructed Western center, which I am also part of, and go into a space in between.” Pieces specifically created for this exhibition are on view, along with Jungerman’s work from the last 15 years. —J.D.
