“What I really hoped to do with my work,” Rashid Johnson has said, “was to at least be able to define my relationship to race.” Johnson makes art in a variety of mediums, all of which seek to explore African-American history and culture. Born in Chicago in 1977, he works with tools of his own making and with familiar materials such as shea butter and black soap, creating pieces that are immensely personal. The exhibition “Sodade” takes its title from a song that recalls the forced migration of Mozambicans to São Tomé in the 1950s. Hauser & Wirth presents an extensive collection of Johnson’s paintings and sculptures. —Thalia Bonas
