Quentin Blake: From the Studio

May 8 – Dec 31, 2019
2 Granary Square, Kings Cross, London N1C 4BH, UK

He likes to draw fast, but doesn’t like to draw cars. He never draws from life—“No. I make it all up.” His distinctive style owes something to the work he did on Roald Dahl’s fantastical books—Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, to name one—which called for endless imagination. It’s not an easy style to describe—scribbly, anarchic, yet deeply empathetic. He’s Quentin Blake, otherwise known as “Britain’s best-loved illustrator.” Blake’s drawings have animated over 300 children’s book, as well as books by adults. And then there’s his large-scale art. Now, at the House of Illustration, there’s a gallery dedicated solely to Blake, a special space for changing exhibitions of his ever-fresh work. How wonderful! —L.J.
