“All politics is local”—so goes the adage popularized by the venerable former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill—and political documentaries don’t get much more local than Emma Fidel’s Queen of New York. It’s a lower-case, tag-along account of a city council race in upper Manhattan that will provoke tiny shocks of recognition from anyone who lives in Washington Heights or uses Fresh Direct bags as soft luggage. What gives this doc its bazazz, wiggy energy, and rooting interest is its star-subject, drag queen Marti Gould Cummings (they/them), who is campaigning to be the first openly nonbinary member of the City Council and giving it all they got. Additional effervescence and crusader zeal are provided by guest appearances from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilana Glazer (Broad City), and a bevy of drag artists. Sashay, shantay! —James Wolcott
