Pure Country is a 1992 movie musical that riffs on the age-old story of the prodigal son. A country-music star, played by the real country star George Strait, decides to hang up his hat, abandoning fame to return to his roots. That summary may sound sappy, but the movie has become a cultural touchstone for its strangeness and charm, as well as a multi-sequel franchise. Now it has a musical version. While Strait won’t be reprising his role, this stage adaptation does include the movie’s top tracks and a few new bonus tunes. According to the director Dan Knechtges, the show is a “celebration of Texas culture,” with a message about the “importance of home.” —C.J.F.
