Annie Dorsen’s “algorithmic theatre” was conceived in 2010, as she finished writing Hello Hi There, a show that stars two Macbooks that are programmed to debate human intelligence. “I started to see algorithms almost like little dramaturgs and little performers all in one,” she has explained. In her latest show, Prometheus Firebringer, Dorsen uses ChatGPT to write the missing sections of Prometheia, a Greek tragedy by Aeschylus. The trilogy tells the story of how Prometheus defies Zeus by giving man fire, an element that sparks creative innovation and incurs Zeus’s wrath. Dorsen’s show is complemented by a Greek chorus programmed by artificial intelligence. The show makes its Off Broadway premiere in Brooklyn. —Jensen Davis
