Production for a Circle

“There wouldn’t be a need to humanize us if you weren’t working from a perspective of us not being human,” the artist Aria Dean said in a recent interview, referring to the racial themes alive in her work. The young artist and curator has quickly become known for deeply philosophical takes on art. Now she jumps mediums with a play of four characters. Taking place in a minimalist circular set, a dinner party spirals out of control. As four people lose sight of themselves and each other, Dean thinks about the “individual” and his/her potential for reconfiguration. —J.V.
