Back in the mid-aughts, there was nothing like To Catch a Predator, the show that lured pedophiles to sting rooms using child actors, looking to expose the criminals on tape. At the helm of it all was host Chris Hansen, who would pompously confront each felon with their evils before they were carted off by the police. After one subject committed suicide, however, the show ended in 2008. Director Lance Oppenheim now revisits America’s obsession with the franchise, telling the story of Hansen’s ruthless rise to media dominance. Robert Pattinson, who is cast in the role of Hansen, is no stranger to freakish, off-kilter loners. He gave us a darker take on Bruce Wayne in The Batman, played a borderline-insane lighthouse keeper in The Lighthouse, and was Edward Cullen, the awkward vampire heartthrob in Twilight. Now looking to root out society’s worst, his character ultimately ends up caught in his own mania. “It reminded me of Jack Nicholson in The Shining,” Oppenheim has said of Pattinson’s performance. “Very heightened, but with a level of tragedy and insecurity, something very honest.” Phoebe Bridgers and Skyler Gisondo costar.
