What themes shape African photography today? Presenting five contemporary photographers from Africa—artists active in South Africa, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of Congo—this exhibition showcases wildly diverse approaches to the medium. While Mário Macilau is focused on fringe communities and their rituals, Amilton Neves Cuna explores the changing history of Maputo’s Grand Hotel, an Art Deco icon. Anke Loots and Nonzuzo Gxekwa make images that are meditative, and Léonard Pogo frames landscapes as allegories. None of these artists are formally represented by any gallery. —E.C.
