Francis Poulenc’s Gloria is a work of orchestral and choral panache, not without a streak of the barbaric, notably in the flourishes for the brass. According to the composer, the knockabout mood in the “Laudamus te” section was inspired by the sight of Benedictine monks playing soccer. (Benedictines are nominally a contemplative order.) Poulenc likewise acknowledges the precedent of the by turns bracing and solemn Gloria of Vivaldi. The conductor Chloé Dusfrene’s Hong Kong program works its way up to the Poulenc by way of Haydn’s Te Deum, Anthony Au’s Hark! The Midnight Bell Echoes (a world premiere), and Vaughan Williams’s Five Mystical Songs, set to the transcendent poetry of the Welsh Anglican George Herbert. The baritone soloist in the songs is Caleb Woo. The soprano Dani Zhang Jingdan officiates in Poulenc’s showy flights, with backup from the Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus and the HKU Chamber Singers. —Matthew Gurewitsch
